What Business Fits Your Skills? A Self-Inventory That Actually Works
March 4, 2026 · 6 min read
Browsing '47 business ideas' lists is entertainment, not decision-making. Ideas don't fail because they're bad; they fail because they're mismatched — wrong skills, wrong hours, wrong capital, wrong temperament. Matching beats brainstorming, and matching starts with an honest inventory.
The four questions that do the work
- ▸What do people already come to you for? (Coworkers' asks are market research you've been collecting for years)
- ▸What work makes you lose track of time — and what work do you dread even when paid?
- ▸What do your constraints actually allow: real hours per week, real capital, family non-negotiables?
- ▸How do you feel about selling, managing people, and physical work? (The three axes that eliminate more models than any other)
Skills transfer further than job titles suggest
A nurse's real inventory: calm under pressure, protocol discipline, family communication — senior care, health-adjacent services, or care-business consulting fit before 'nursing side gig' ever would. A project manager's: logistics, vendor wrangling, deadline math — route businesses are literally that skill set with revenue attached. Inventory the verbs of your job, not the noun.
Constraints are features
Ten hours a week doesn't disqualify you; it disqualifies models that need forty — and points at routes, resale, content, and vending. $3,000 of capital doesn't mean wait; it means service businesses now, capital businesses later. The plan that fits your actual life is the one that survives contact with it.
This inventory is, transparently, what our quiz automates: 21 questions across skills, resources, and temperament, scored against 140+ models, with your own words quoted back in the reasoning. Do it on paper or do it in three minutes — just do the matching before the shopping.
